Long Island Weather: Severe Storms Possible Wednesday
Damaging wind gusts and hail are the main threats. An isolated tornado can't be ruled out, the National Weather Service said.
LONG ISLAND, NY — Severe thunderstorms are possible Wednesday on Long Island, the National Weather Service said in a hazardous weather outlook issued for the region.
"The Storm Prediction Center has placed the area in a slight to enhanced risk for severe weather this afternoon and this evening," the outlook says. "There is the potential for isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms with the main threat being damaging winds, however, small to large hail is possible. And an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out."
Thunderstorms will be develop Wednesday morning ahead of a cold front across upstate New York and track across eastern Pennsylvania and metropolitan New York late in the afternoon and the evening.

The highest chance of severe storms on the island will be from about 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., according to the weather service's hour-by-hour forecast.

Wednesday- Showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3pm. Some storms could be severe, with hail, damaging winds, and heavy rain. High near 78. West wind 7 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Wednesday night- Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 10pm. Some storms could be severe, with damaging winds. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 65. West wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Thursday- A 30 percent chance of showers after 1pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 79. West wind 5 to 7 mph.
Thursday Night- A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66. South wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight.
Friday- A 30 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 78. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon.
Friday Night- A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 67.
Saturday- A 30 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 78.
Saturday Night- A 30 percent chance of showers before 10pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 62.
Sunday- Sunny, with a high near 74.
Sunday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 58.
