Man Shoots Ex-Wife, Self Before Fleeing On LIE: Police
Police say he led officers on a chase across Long Island into Queens Sunday night.
HOLTSVILLE, NY — A 35-year-old man shot the mother of his child at her home Sunday night then led police on a chase across Long Island, Suffolk police said.
Police said Jiuber Mejia-Chicas, of Holtsville, shot the 28-year-old woman with a handgun on Morris Avenue in Holtsville around 9:25 p.m. The woman, who police did not name, is Mejia-Chicas's ex-wife, the New York Post reported.
Mejia-Chicas then shot himself in the head before fleeing in a 2005 Ford Escape, police said. The woman was taken Stony Brook University Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Highway Patrol Sgt. Justin Carey spotted Mejia-Chicas a short time later driving west on the Long Island Expressway and tried to pull him over, police said.
Mejia-Chicas failed to stop and drove into Nassau County and then into Queens to the Whitestone Expressway, where he stopped at 10:15 p.m.

Mejia-Chicas was arrested and transported to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Sixth Squad detectives charged Mejia-Chicas with second- and third-degree assault, as well as second-degree criminal use of a firearm. He was held at the Sixth Precinct and scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Monday.
