North's Dr. Georgia Afxendiou Honored by LICSS
Wins Outstanding High School Social Studies Teaching Award.

Sachem North social studies teacher Dr. Georgia Afxendiou will be presented with the Outstanding High School Social Studies Teaching Award by the Long Island Council for the Social Studies Tuesday night.
Based upon her tremendous efforts, Dr. Afxendiou has been recognized by the LICSS for her wealth of knowledge in social studies content and effective and inspiring social studies teaching, according to North social studies chair Tom Cestaro.
Dr. Afxendiou teaches AP World History 9, AP Comparative Government and Politics, and Global 9. Â She is also responsible for founding and nurturing the highly successful Model United Nations Club at Sachem North.

The LICSS is a professional association comprised of members who are teachers, supervisors, museum educators, librarians and others involved in social studies education in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

In the student divisions of this year's LICSS awards competition, Allyson Gruber placed second (high honors) in Biology, Ruchi Shah placed first (highest honors) in Biology, and Garima Yadav placed first (highest honors) in Chemistry. In addition, Ruchi and Garima each won Best in Category ($250), the STANYS Suffolk Edition Special Awards ($50), Dr. Howard Mofenson Special Awards ($50), and $50 for advancing to the state level on June 10 in Albany.
