Police Rescue Elderly Man Stranded on Flooded Roadway

Officers Thomas Wilson and Matthew Detleff of Suffolk PD's Sixth Precinct rescued Anthony Monticciolo, 86, on Wednesday morning.

An elderly man was rescued on Wednesday morning by Suffolk County Sixth Precinct police officers after being stranded on a flooded Coram road, police report.

On Aug. 13, a record 13.26 inches of rain fell on parts of Long Island, causing widespread flooding. Anthony Monticciolo, 86, of Centereach, drove his 2008 Subaru into a flooded roadway on North Ocean Avenue and his vehicle immediately became disabled, police said. The water was approximately 6 feet deep and began to fill the Subaru barring Monticciolo from exiting, police said.

Officers Thomas Wilson and Matthew Detleff, who had been conducting traffic control and diverting motorists nearby, waded into the flooded roadway and swam to the victim’s car where they successfully removed him and brought him to safety, police report. Selden Fire Department personnel examined Monticciolo who was not injured, police report.
