'Prolonged Period of Precipitation​' in Long Island Forecast

We will start with the good weather news for the trick-or-treaters and their parents out there. Halloween on Wednesday is going to be the nicest day of the week, which means your kids can spend more time outside collecting candy that you will then eat when they go to sleep.

Once Halloween is over, though, we will likely be dealing with "a prolonged period of precipitation," the National Weather Service says.

A slow moving frontal system could bring rain to the island from Thursday into the weekend.

There is no sign of snow anywhere in the extended Long Island forecast. The first snowflakes of the season last year fell on Nov. 20.

The full forecast:

Overnight- A chance of showers, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2am. Steady temperature around 51. Calm wind becoming southwest around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Monday- Showers likely, mainly before 8am. Partly sunny, with a high near 58. West wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Monday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 40. West wind 9 to 14 mph.

Tuesday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 54. Northwest wind 13 to 15 mph.

Tuesday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 43. Northwest wind around 7 mph.

Wednesday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 63.

Wednesday Night- Mostly cloudy, with a low around 52.

Thursday- A 30 percent chance of showers after noon. Cloudy, with a high near 67.

Thursday Night- A 50 percent chance of showers. Cloudy, with a low around 55.

Friday- A 50 percent chance of showers. Cloudy, with a high near 62.

Friday Night- A 50 percent chance of showers. Cloudy, with a low around 48.

Saturday- A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 60.

Saturday Night- Mostly cloudy, with a low around 44.
