RONKONKOMA, NY — Baumann & Sons, a Ronkonkoma-based school bus company, is laying off roughly 900 drivers and other employees Wednesday due to school closures resulting from the new coronavirus, union representatives told Newsday. Workers were told in a letter their jobs were being terminated and company contributions to their medical insurance would be axed, Newsday reported. Impacted employees worked in at least 10 school districts across the island, including Northport-East Northport, South Huntington, Commack and William Floyd, according to Newsday. A March 20 letter from Baumann & Sons, obtained by Newsday, told workers the company is "optimistic and look forward to recalling everyone from layoff when this crisis passes."
