Sachem East Teacher Charged With Assault, Child Endangerment

FARMINGVILLE, NY — A Sachem High School East teacher was charged with assault and child endangerment after being arrested in 2019, according to court records.

Daniel Egbert, who teaches science, was also arrested in 2020 on a criminal contempt charge.

Egbert, 45, was released without bail and had been in the classroom until this week.

"While the district does not comment on matters of personnel, please be advised that the teacher in question is currently absent from the classroom," Sachem Superintendent Christopher Pellettieri told Patch Thursday night.

Pellettieri did not respond to a question asking if the district had been aware of the charges against Egbert before this week.

Egbert, who has taught in Sachem for two decades, was arrested on April 19, 2019 and charged with second degree harassment, a violation. A Suffolk County grand jury later indicted Egbert on misdemeanor charges of assault, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal mischief.

Egbert was arrested again on Jan. 27 and charged with second degree criminal contempt: disobeying a court order.

The Suffolk County District Attorney's office did not respond to requests for more information on the case.

Egbert's next court date is on March 8. If convicted, he faces up to a year in prison on each of the charges.
