Sachem North Students Win LI Envirothon

Winner named this past Tuesday at Old Bethpage Restoration Village.

A five-member team of students from Sachem North High School is one of two teams to win the 2013 Long Island Envirothon, which is sponsored by Canon U.S.A.

The winning teams, which also included a team of students from Chaminade High School, were announced this past Tuesday following the completion of the Long Island Envirothon at Old Bethpage Restoration Village in Old Bethpage.

Students involved in the project included Tyler Breitfeller, Sharon Luebs, Ruchi Shah, Aly Gruber and Danielle White with Charlie Horn serving as the alternate. Advisors were Monica Marlowe and John O'Neil.

As part of the North American Envirothon, participating students learn about their natural surroundings as well as environmental conservation and sustainable development. The Nassau and Suffolk County Soil & Water Conservation Districts coordinate the Long Island Envirothon in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

“We are very proud of all the participating students in this year’s Envirothon," said Bunji Yano, senior director and general manager, Corporate Communications Division, Canon U.S.A. “All of us at Canon would like to congratulate the two winning teams and wish them the best of luck at the state competition this May.”

This year's competition focused on "Sustainable Rangeland Management." More than 30 teams rotated between subject stations and answered in-depth questions pertaining to the topic.

Funded by the event’s sponsors, students of the two top-scoring teams, one from Nassau County and one from Suffolk County, each received a $500 scholarship, and paid registration and transportation to compete in the New York State Envirothon held on May 30-31 at Morrisville State College in Morrisville, N.Y.
