Sachem Opens Track Season With Strong Outing

Girls run at Ross Golden Developmental Meet at Bay Shore.

The Sachem North girl’s varsity track team had an outstanding season opener at the Ross Golden Developmental Meet at Bay Shore High School Saturday. 

A mix of veterans and rookie team members had strong efforts in sprint, distance and field events.

Medals are awarded to top performers in heats (running events) and flights (field events).

Veterans, including Kristie Michta (HJ) and Stephanie Traina (100 m. and 400 m.), and rookies proudly displayed medals following events.  Rookie heat winners include Nikki Fogarty, Ali Van Sicklin, Amanda Flynn and Alexis Behret.  

Meet day team goals included focusing on race preparation including both warm-ups and mental preparation. A special area of focus was paid to the final straightaway in events from 400 meters up, according to Sachem coach Alex Young.

“Sachem came into the meet determined to chase down rivals and not give up race position on the home stretch of races,” he said.

Coaches were pleased with the execution of middle distance and distance squad athletes in their collective execution of this goal.

Sachem was very vocal in cheering for teammates and in demonstrating great sportsmanship throughout the meet.  Many team members gathered along the high jump apron cheered on high jumpers Michta and Carly Swinford following the conclusion of Sachem’s track events. 

The Flaming Arrows compete at Lindy Relays next Saturday.
