Sachem Seniors Participate in Cooking Competition

Two seniors from Sachem High Schools East and North competed in the Suffolk County Community College Culinary Competition last week in Riverhead.

Jessica Melendez, from East, placed third and Stephanie Ilasi, from North, along with seven other seniors from around the Long Island competed for a $1,500 scholarship to Suffolk’s Culinary Arts program.

The competition was in mystery basket format, meaning each participant did not know the items he or she was going to cook with. 

They received a starch, a vegetable, a protein and limited time to create a dish.

Melendez and Ilasi won competitions at their own high schools in order to participate at this event.

Melendez will begin the culinary arts program at Suffolk in the fall and Ilasi will be attending Dehli in their culinary arts program.
