Strong Storm Likely to Batter Long Island Late Week

Let's start with the good news (for most people, at least): There is no snow in the forecast for Long Island.

A powerful storm is expected to impact the region late this week, but with temperatures well above the freezing mark, it will all be in the form of rain. But we will likely see plenty of it and that will bring some flooding concerns.

" The heaviest rain at this time looks to fall late Thursday night into Friday," the National Weather Service says. "The potential is there for a significant rainfall event with moisture being tapped from the tropics."

The combination of a full moon, rainfall and strong winds ahead of an approaching warm front on Friday are pointing to a widespread minor coastal flood event, with the potential for even higher water levels.

"It is too early to be specific with water levels at this time, but the situation bears watching," the weather service says.

Even without nasty weather, Thursday is projected to be the worst day to travel of the holiday season, according to AAA.

Tuesday- Sunny, with a high near 36. Wind chill values between 15 and 25. Breezy, with a northwest wind 16 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph.

Tuesday Night- Clear, with a low around 20. Wind chill values between 10 and 15. Northwest wind 7 to 14 mph.

Wednesday- Sunny, with a high near 43. Wind chill values between 15 and 25. Southwest wind 3 to 8 mph.

Wednesday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 33. Southwest wind 5 to 8 mph.

Thursday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 49.

Thursday Night- Rain, mainly after 9pm. Low around 44. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Friday- Rain. High near 56. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Friday Night- A 50 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 45.

Saturday- Partly sunny, with a high near 49.

Saturday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 34.

Sunday- Sunny, with a high near 44.
