Timeline For Potentially Severe Storms; What To Expect

It's going to be another stormy August night on Long Island with potentially severe thunderstorms in the forecast.

"Severe thunderstorm development is possible this afternoon and evening," the National Weather Service says. "The primary threat is damaging winds, however an isolated tornado is also possible. There is also a low flash flood threat with the heaviest storms."

Any thunderstorms should weaken after midnight, but may not completely dissipate like in the early summer. See the hour-by-hour forecast below.

Friday Afternoon- A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 5pm. Some storms could be severe, with damaging winds and heavy rain. Partly sunny, with a high near 88. Heat index values as high as 96. South wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Friday Night- Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly between 8pm and 1am. Some storms could be severe, with damaging winds and heavy rain. Cloudy, with a low around 74. South wind 9 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Saturday- A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 10am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 88. West wind around 9 mph.

Saturday Night- A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Cloudy, with a low around 70. Northwest wind 6 to 8 mph becoming northeast after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Sunday- A 50 percent chance of showers. Cloudy, with a high near 76. Northeast wind 10 to 13 mph.

Sunday Night- A 50 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 67.

Monday- A 30 percent chance of showers before 9am. Partly sunny, with a high near 80.

Monday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 68.
