Harbor Country Day Takes Fourth Place in Regional Science Bowl

By Brynn Moller, 7th grader at Harbor Country Day School

On March 2, two teams from Harbor Country Day School, located in St. James, competed in the Long Island Regional Middle School Science Bowl, held at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

As the event began, 20 teams from across Long Island gathered in the auditorium waiting, anxiously, for the event to start. The director of the Science Bowl, Amanda Horn, gave a speech in which she stated that the Science Bowl is a place for students to learn and enjoy science. When she finished the speech, students gathered with their teams to discuss their schedules.

Harbor’s science teacher, Danielle Davey, brought both teams into a huddle and told them, “We are here to have fun. If we win, we win, if we lose, we lose.” The teams then split up to head to their respective competitions.

Both teams won their first sets, bringing their confidence and hopes up. They took little time to enjoy their win, and jumped straight into their second matches. In the end, team one walked away with two wins, one tie, and one loss and team two finished the tournament with an impressive fourth place finish.

Mrs. Davey added, “This was our first year participating in the competition and we’re happy that we took fourth place. We are grateful to Brookhaven Lab for hosting the event and we plan to be back next year!”
