Martin Luther King Jr. Day: What's Open, What's Closed in Smithtown
Check our list of what's open and what's closed before heading out on Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday held to honor the life and the work of activist Martin Luther King Jr., who fought for equal civil rights for African Americans using non-violent civil disobedience.Â
In honor of the federal holiday, many government offices will be closed while most local businesses remain open.Â
Here's a list of important openings and closings:Â
- Smithtown Central School District: Â Students have the day off from classes, all buildings are closed.Â
- Smithtown Town Hall:Â All town offices are closed on Jan. 20.Â
- Suffolk Government Offices:Â County offices on nearby Route 347 will be closed on Monday.Â
- New York State offices:Â The Department of Motor Vehicles in Hauppauge and other state offices in the Perry B. Duryea building of Route 347 will be closed Monday.Â
- Bank of America, Capital One, Chase, HSBC Bank, People's United Bank, Suffolk County National Bank: Closed for HolidaysÂ
- U.S. Post Offices:Â All post offices will be closed Monday, there will be no mail delivery.Â
- Smithtown Public Library:Â All library branches will remain open on Monday, regular hours.Â
