SMITHTOWN, NY - Tuesday marks the official start of 2019, which means many offices and stores will be closed.

Lots of government workers will get the day off, but not everything will be coming to a complete halt.

Here's a look at what's open and closed in Smithtown on the first day of the new year.

Government Buildings And Banks

  • Town, village, state and federal offices will be closed on New Year's Day.
  • Post offices will be closed. Regular mail will not be delivered.
  • Libraries will be closed.
  • Many banks will be closed on New Year's Day because it's a federal holiday.
  • Many local governments will be holding inauguration ceremonies. Check with your town or village.

Schools

  • Jan. 1 is the first holiday for public schools for 2019. Most school districts will be reopening Wednesday, Jan. 2.

Public Transportation

Stores

Some stores such as Trader Joe's and Costco will be closed on New Year's Day. Others such as Target and Stop and Shop will be open. It's probably best to call your favorite store before heading out.
