Melville-based Cona Elder Law has presented its “Empowering Award” to paralegal Michele Crawford. The Farmingville resident who joined the firm in 2016 was recognized for her leadership role in a new program designed to assist local seniors in need of vaccination appointments.

“This award is reserved for individuals at Cona Elder Law who go above and beyond the traditional scope of their job to reflect the values of our people and our law firm,” said managing partner Jennifer Cona. “The award’s name comes from our mission to empower the best lives for our elder clients. That is exactly what Michele Crawford did under very challenging circumstances. We are extremely proud of her and of the program she launched to help Long Island seniors.”

Ms. Crawford was the driving force behind a complimentary service which allowed local seniors – whether or not they were clients – to access the Cona Elder Law hotline and request an appropriate vaccine appointment. From there, the firm’s professional staff patiently made sure each and every person who asked got an appointment that worked for them.

“Early on, the appointment process had so much red tape and confusion and required some advanced computer skills,” said Ms. Cona. “As part of a law firm practicing elder law, Michele understood that many seniors – including those most at risk – would need help to successfully book their appointments. Moreover, she knew that, as a paralegal, she was trained specifically to interpret fine print and work through paperwork and processes. She knew her unique skillset could literally provide lifesaving medicine to many of her neighbors who were unable to make their own appointments.”

The program launched successfully securing well over 100 appointments in a matter of days and is still functioning today even as appointments have become less challenging.

According to Ms. Cona, “It is one thing to talk about a firm's values or about supporting the communities we serve. It’s something else altogether to proactively seize the opportunity to serve. This award is about pride and people. I am truly proud to present Michele Crawford with our Empowering Award for 2021.
