Progressive Activist, John Atkinson, announces congressional bid

Farmingville, NY ━━ John Atkinson, 27, lifelong resident of Farmingville, New York, officially announced he will seek the Democratic nomination for NY-01 in 2022. John Atkinson, a proud progressive activist, believes it’s time the working class residents of Suffolk County had an advocate in Washington that fights for them, not campaign contributors and the wealthy.

Atkinson released a brief statement, stating “It is my honor and privilege to announce my candidacy for Congress. Our country has many problems, and our elected officials represent big money donors instead of representing us, the people of our district and the entirety of the American people. If I am elected to congress, I vow to fight to take the corruption out of our governing process and put the power back into your hands. I am a working class American and it's time we have the working class represent the interests of the working class instead of continuing to have the elite represent themselves and their own interests.”

Atkinson attended the Sachem School District and continued his education at Suffolk County Community College. He then attended Stony Brook University, where he graduated in 2018 with his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Sociology. Throughout his life, Atkinson has continually observed how the working class of Suffolk County are constantly presented with hardships of many varieties, while politicians, the incredibly wealthy, and the well-connected continue to accumulate power and affluence. In his extensive work around our community, Atkinson has seen the level of dedication many Long Islanders have, working hard to earn a living and live out their own American dream. He currently works at Independent Support Services, a company that works with developmentally-disabled individuals in helping them become more independent in their own daily lives.

Atkinson is excited and eagerly awaits hitting the campaign trail to engage in dialogue and interactions with members of our county. He strives to become one of the hardest-working candidates to ever run for Congress. Atkinson stated, “I will work hard to earn all of your votes and I believe the best way to do so is to discuss the issues directly with voters, not play politics.”
