Rockwell Kent Exhibit coming to LIMM

The first ever Long Island exhibition of twentieth-century artist Rockwell Kent’s engravings and lithographs will be opening on Friday, November 6th .

Renowned for his block print book illustrations, particularly The Complete Works of William Shakespeare and Moby Dick, Kent worked in a variety of media, including oil painting, woodcuts, lithographs, drawings and ceramics.

The exhibit is curated from the private collection of Ralf C. Nemec, a native Long Islander who has the largest assemblage of Rockwell Kent prints in the world and has been acquiring the legendary artist’s work for more than 30 years. He is proud to be partnering with the museum to present the premier exhibit of his collection in our area.

Rockwell Kent studied architecture at Columbia University and painted under William Merritt Chase at the Shinnecock Hills School. His numerous jobs as architectural draftsman, illustrator, lobsterman, ship’s carpenter, longshoreman and lighthouse keeper fed his vision. Kent’s adventures captured the American imagination. Furthermore, his paintings, lithographs and woodcuts often portrayed the bleak and rugged aspects of nature; a reflection of his life in harsh climates.

The exhibit’s opening reception will be held on Thursday, November 5th from 7:00 – 9:00 PM and will remain on display through December 3rd.
