SMITHTOWN, NY — Auntie, a 4-year-old female domestic shorthair, was named the Smithtown Animal Shelter's Pet of the Week.

Auntie joined the shelter as part of its Trap-Neuter-Release program. She had a few kittens following her around when she was trapped, according to the shelter. She was already spayed, meaning the kittens couldn’t be hers, so she was named Auntie instead.

"Auntie is sweet and outgoing, and she loves nothing more than getting attention," the shelter wrote in an email. "She would love a home to call her own. This affectionate mush would do well in a home with children or a home with other cats."

The Smithtown Animal Shelter's primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to it. The Animal Control Officers and kennel attendants at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter or they can set up an at-home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets or the household itself.

The shelter is also seeking foster volunteers. Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens and dogs in their own homes. Some animals need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for an extended time.

The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation is scheduled to host a series of low-cost spay/neuter mobile clinics at the Smithtown Animal Shelter on Feb. 17, March 3, March 17, March 31, April 14, and April 28. To book appointments, you can call 631-566-8870.
