Smithtown To Host Medicine Disposal Drive

The safe disposal of the medicine will help protect the environment. "Operation Medicine Cabinet" is scheduled for next week.

SMITHTOWN, NY — If you have some medicine you don't use that's past its expiration date, an upcoming Smithtown event could be the cure for what ails you.

"Operation Medicine Cabinet," a medicine disposal drive-thru, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday in the back parking lot of the Town of Smithtown Horizons Center, located at 161 E. Main St., Smithtown. The drive is the result of a partnership between the Suffolk County Police Department's 4th Precinct, the Town of Smithtown Horizons Counseling and Education Center, and the Smithtown Youth Bureau. Residents will have an additional location to safely disposed of medication.

Residents are encouraged to bring any expired or unused medication in a Ziploc-type bag to the Horizons Center for proper disposal by the Suffolk County Police Department. No syringes, auto-injectors, or liquids will be accepted.

Safe disposal of medications helps to prevent both potential abuse and the environmental damage caused by medications in water systems, according to the town.

Residents can additionally dispose of medication at all times at the Department of Public Safety, at 65 Maple Ave. in Smithtown. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, residents were asked to call the Department of Public Safety at 631-360-7553 before arriving to ensure availability.
