Smithtown Police Blotter: Dead Woman's Identity Used In Theft

A thief opened an account in the name of someone else's deceased sister and transferred a lot of money, police say.

The Suffolk County Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • Dec. 16: Grand larceny (third-degree) was reported on Florence Avenue in Smithtown from Dec. 13 at 3 a.m. Someone went into a man's unlocked 2015 Dodge Ram truck, stole his checkbook and then deposited two checks into bank accounts that were not signed by the man, police said.
  • Dec. 15: Grand larceny (fourth-degree) was reported on Rose Court in Smithtown from Dec. 14 at 10:30 p.m. Someone stole a red 2006 Ford E-350 that was parked outside a home, police said. It's unclear if a spare set of keys was inside the car, police said.
  • Dec. 15: Identity theft (first-degree) was reported on Ursular Court in Smithtown from Sept. 2 at noon. Someone opened an account in the victim's deceased sister's name and then transferred a very large sum of money from one account into another, police said.
  • Dec. 15: Identity theft (first-degree) was reported on Wyandanch Boulevard in Smithtown at 7 p.m. Someone was trying to sell items on eBay when they were contacted by someone they didn't know, police said. The person told the seller they needed their bank information to buy the products, police said. The person used the information to withdraw money from the account instead of depositing it, police said.
  • Dec. 13: Grand larceny (fourth-degree) was reported on Celestial Court in Smithtown at 7:30 p.m. Someone went into two unlocked vehicles, police said. One was a 2019 Land Rover, and the other a 2021 Cadillac, police said. The thief stole cash, a purse, debit cards and a driver's license, police said.
