Smithtown Police Blotter: Money Stolen From Person's Bank Account

A St. James resident allowed someone who was posing as a Verizon employee access to their computer before the money was stolen, police say.

The Suffolk County Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • March 19: Identity theft (second-degree) was reported on Charter Lane in Smithtown from March 10 at 3:30 p.m. Someone used someone else's identity to open an Optimum account, which has been open for three years, police said.
  • March 19: Grand larceny (second-degree) was reported on Plane Tree Lane in St. James from March 13 at 11 a.m. Someone posing as a Verizon employee took remote control of a St. James resident's computer and stole money from their bank account, police said.
  • March 18: Identity theft (second-degree) was reported on Dorchester Road in Smithtown from Dec. 20, 2020, at noon. Someone used someone else's Social Security Number to apply for unemployment benefits, police said.
  • March 18: Grand larceny (fourth-degree) was reported on Raynier Place in Nesconset from March 17 at 9 p.m. A wallet containing credit cards was snatched from a 2018 Dodge 1500 parked outside a home, police said.
  • March 18: Criminal mischief (third-degree) was reported on East Main Street in Village of the Branch from March 16 at 11 a.m. Someone damaged a home's windows with rocks, police said.
  • March 15: Criminal mischief (third-degree) was reported on East Main Street in Village of the Branch from March 12 at 2 p.m. Someone damaged the same Village of the Branch home's windows with rocks, police said.
