Smithtown Police Blotter: Person Gets Fake Check For Their Bike

ALSO: Someone stole money from someone else's bank account and then turned off their cell phone number, police say.

The Suffolk County Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • Jan. 8: Grand larceny (first-degree) was reported on Moriches Road in Lake Grove from Dec. 31, 2020, at 5 p.m. Someone posted a bicycle for sale on an app called OfferUp, police said. The buyer sent a fraudulent check to pay for the bike, police said.
  • Jan. 7: Identity theft (first-degree) was reported on Route 111 in Smithtown from Nov. 18, 2020, at noon. Someone transferred cash out of someone else's banking account, police said.
  • Jan. 7: Grand larceny (third-degree) was reported on Lindell Avenue in Lake Grove at 1:50 a.m. Someone stole all four tires and rims off a 2020 Honda Accord that was parked in the car owner's driveway, police said.
  • Jan. 5: Grand larceny (fourth-degree) was reported on James Neck Road in Nissequogue from Dec. 3, 2020, at 5 p.m. Someone went into an unlocked 2014 Mercedes that was parked in a driveway and stole a purse containing cash, health insurance and debit cards, police said.
  • Jan. 5: Grand larceny (third-degree) was reported on Gotham Drive in St. James from Nov. 23, 2020, at 1 p.m. Someone forged someone else's signature on a check and cashed it, police said.
  • Jan. 5: Identity theft (second-degree) was reported on Lakeside Road in Lake Grove from Dec. 20 at 1:20 p.m. Someone hacked into someone else's Target store account, which had their credit card information saved, and ordered merchandise, police said.
  • Jan. 4: Identity theft (second-degree) was reported on Twisting Drive in Lake Grove from Dec. 5 at 1:30 p.m. Someone accessed someone else's banking accounts, stole money, used the funds to buy a cell phone, and then shut off the bank account owner's cell phone number, police said.
