Smithtown Police Blotter: Phones Purchased Through Identity Fraud

A thief used someone else's Social Security Number to open an account with Verizon and buy the phones, police say.

The Suffolk County Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

  • May 10: Identity theft (first-degree) was reported on Winston Drive in Smithtown from Jan. 10 at 2:20 p.m. Someone used a person's Social Security Number to open an account with Verizon and purchase multiple phones, police said.
  • May 9: Grand larceny (third-degree) was reported on Lake Avenue in St. James from May 3 at 9 a.m. A thief opened a fraudulent online bank account through TD Bank in someone else's name and then linked it to an existing account, police said. The fake account was then used to take money out of the real account, police said.
