SYOSSET, NY — A Long Island high school music class got the surprise of a lifetime when a member of the popular English rock band Def Leppard virtually crashed their class.

Phil Collen, guitarist with the band, teamed up with music education company Yousician to put on a live, virtual performance of the 1987 hit "Pour Some Sugar On Me" for music students at Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. A video of the performance was uploaded to YouTube on Thursday.

Collen's goal was to excite and inspire the students to continue pursuing their music education.

After Collen, 62, finished performing, it was the students' turn. A handful of student-guitarists performed their own versions of the song for him, and he offered them tips on how they can improve. Students also asked the rock star questions about his career and guitar expertise.

He told the class: "It really comes down to putting the effort in, practicing and getting the technique down. It’s all a learning curve. You gotta be you."

Def Leppard has charted numerous Billboard hits such as "Two Steps Behind," "Animal" and "Love Bites."

The arts school is Long Island's only public high school dedicated to the arts.

Yousician provides interactive learning for guitar, bass, ukulele, piano and voice. The company provided the students codes for free premium subscription access to encourage them to continue their music education virtually this summer.

The students will each receive a signed Def Leppard T-shirt.

"Being an artist consists of so many different journeys and for each road taken it can be completely different," Collen said in a news release. "The opportunities for creative expression and inspiration are endless —a book, a song, a movie, a phrase or even a drumbeat coming out of someone's car."
