Woodbury Man Seriously Injured In Collision W/ Tractor Trailer

The man, 79, drove off the road before crashing into the back of a trailer on the shoulder, police say.

ISLANDIA, NY — A man was seriously injured in a collision with a parked tractor-trailer in Islandia on Thursday morning, Suffolk police said.

Stephen Sherman, 79, of Woodbury, was driving a 2013 Nissan Altima eastbound on Veterans Memorial Highway when his vehicle left the roadway near Old Nichols Road at 7:33 a.m. and struck the back of a disabled 2017 International tractor-trailer that was parked on the shoulder with its hazard lights on, police said.

Sherman was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was listed in serious condition, police said.

The Nissan was impounded for a safety check, and the tractor-trailer was inspected by Motor Carrier Safety Section officers.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on the crash to call the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.
