Math Competition Adds Up to Medals for H.B. Thompson

Syosset students present math papers at the Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair Nassau preliminary round.

Three H.B. Thompson Middle School students presented, explained and defended their research math papers at the Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair Nassau preliminary round at Hofstra University on Feb. 27.

Seventh-grade student Esha Sharma presented on the Fibonacci sequence, while seventh-grader Sophia Jang presented on fractals. Eighth-grader AJ LaBarca presented on Eratosthenes and the circumference of the earth.

Jang and LaBarca advanced to the final round, where they will compete against both the Nassau and Suffolk round winners at Hofstra on April 24. All participants in the final round received a bronze, silver or gold medal.
