Nassau Library Employee Embezzled More Than $111,000: DA

Officials say the employee, who was in charge of payroll, added money to her checks over a period of years.

SYOSSET, NY — A former employee of the Syosset Public Library embezzled more than $111,000 from the institution over years, according to the Nassau County District Attorney.

Angela Khilnani, 56, of Central Islip, was arraigned on Monday on charges of second-degree grand larceny, first-degree falsifying business records and official misconduct. She was released and required to surrender her passport. She is due back in court on Sept. 9. If convicted of the top charge, she could face up to 15 years in prison.

“This defendant abused the faith and trust of the community by allegedly stealing more than $100,000 from the library over seven years,” said Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas. “Libraries provide vital services to our communities, and anyone caught stealing from them will be held to account.”

According to Singas, from 2012 until November 2019, Khilnani stole at least $111,571.24 in payroll funds from the library. As a senior account clerk, Singas said that Khilnani was responsible for the library's bookkeeping.

Singas said that Khilnani would add hours to her timesheet, as well as payments she labeled as "other compensation," which would range from $225 to $2,851. She altered her paycheck at least 100 times, Singas said. Khilnani used the money for personal expenses, Singas said.

Discrepancies in the payroll were found after an investigation by the library's director and general counsel, Singas said. The library looked into their records, and then handed the case over the the district attorney.

Khilnani resigned from her position in 2019.

“The Syosset Public Library is grateful to the Nassau County District Attorney and her staff for their efforts in this investigation and prosecution of this matter," library officials said. "The library has fully cooperated with the investigation and will continue to do so. We are eager to see this matter resolved.”
