New Speed Cameras To Be Installed in Each School District

Baylis, Parkway and Cantiague Elementary Schools are just some of the sites where new speed cameras will be installed.

Radar/speed cameras will be installed in school districts across Nassau County, reports the Legislator’s office.

According to Legislator Judy Jacobs, (D-Woodbury), each school district will have one permanent speed camera in front of one school, and there will only be one school per district with the permanent camera.

The location of the permanent camera was chosen by the County Engineering Department based upon on-site observations, said Jacobs. There will be a sign warning of the camera’s existence before the school road.

Jacobs also announced that the program will begin at the start of the school year and these cameras will only be in use during posted school times. They will not be in operation for evening or weekend sports or other activities, though the camera will be in use in the summer during summer school programs.

The schools selected in Jacobs’ district are Baylis Elementary School in Syosset, Parkway Elementary School in Plainview and Cantiague Elementary School in Jericho.

Jacobs also mentioned that there will also be mobile vans strategically placed at another school in the district, but the permanent radars will then be turned off. Only one school per district is allowed under the program and signs will be posted if another school will be monitored by the mobile van.
