New York Philharmonic Comes to Tilles Center in March

When the orchestra is in town, its members engage with young musicians and music lovers of all ages.

Audience members attending The New York Philharmonic concert at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts Saturday won’t be the only ones in the area enjoying the orchestra this month.

That’s because the musicians are engaging with people of all ages in the community, with programing for the very young, student-musicians and people who simply enjoy a live classical music performance.

This year, new programming is in-store for children.

“The newest component of the relationship are the Concerts for Very Young People that are being presented here on March 29 and 30,” said Susanna Stickley, Tilles’ marketing director.

“This is the first time we are presenting that aspect of New York Philharmonic programming,” she added.

The Very Young People’s Concerts feature games and hands-on music making. The March 29 program is geared for ages 3-6, while the March 30 concert is for those in grades Pre-K–2.

Stickley said Tilles has long enjoyed a relationship with the Philharmonic.

“We have been presenting the New York Philharmonic since 1981 – they were our first performers – and we have a long history of master classes and workshops for LIU students and area high school students as well,” she noted.

In March, members of the New York Philharmonic are coaching not only the LIU Post Orchestra but also the Long Island Youth Orchestra.

And those attending Saturday’s concert can, for an additional $5, also attend a pre-concert discussion lead by Mark Shapiro, DMA, an associate professor of music at LIU Post, to deepen their understanding of the works.

Saturday’s program, conducted by Alan Gilbert, includes Salonen’s Nyx, Ravel’s “Piano Concerto in G Major,” Debussy’s “Jeux: Poème dansé” and Strauss’ “Der Rosenkavalier Suite.”
