Syosset-Area Fourth Of July Fireworks In Doubt

Syosset-area traditional Fourth of July events may not happen, but there are several other ways you can celebrate the holiday safely.

SYOSSET, NY — Fourth of July events will not look the same this year across the country thanks to the coronavirus, and the same is unfortunately true on Long Island. A spokeswoman for the Town of Oyster Bay told Patch on Friday the town hopes to hold Independence Day festivities, but that even if officials are able to hold something, it won't happen until later in July.

"The fireworks provider informs us they are awaiting operational approval from New York State," the town said in a statement.

And while many in Syosset could have headed to annual fireworks shows in East Hills and Jones Beach, neither event will happen this year, organizers and officials said.

Although Syosset-area fireworks, parades and 5Ks have been put on hold, residents can still take a dip at the town's community pools, which were among the first on Long Island to open in the coronavirus era. The TOBAY Spray Park also reopened, as did the Bethpage Skateboard Park. Furthermore, the town launched the island's first-ever drive-in concert series for the summer at TOBAY Beach, as well as a drive-in movie series. Only residents are allowed admission.

Additionally, indoor and outdoor dining will also be available for residents wanting to get out of the house, as long as the infection rate remains down.

Beaches across Long Island remain open as well, including Jones Beach and the town-run beaches, which reopened at half capacity.

Long Island is expected to enter phase three of reopening businesses next week, allowing non hair service-related personal care businesses to reopen, as well as indoor service at restaurants and bars. The reopening comes with severe restrictions, however, such as requiring people to wear masks, social distance from one another and limit capacity to 50 percent.

Due to the pandemic, counties or cities may adjust or cancel events at the last minute. Check your event before you go. Know of other events in the area? Post them on the Patch calendar or share details on our free Neighbor Post feature.
