Syosset Native Sue Bird To Miss Rest Of WNBA Season
Sue Bird will miss the remainder of the 2019 WNBA season and playoffs, the team announced Tuesday.

SYOSSET, NY — Sue Bird, a Syosset native and 11-time WNBA All-Star, will miss the remainder of the season and playoffs with the Seattle Storm, the team announced Tuesday. Bird has not appeared in a game since undergoing successful arthroscopic surgery on her left knee in late May.
"While it has been difficult not to be on the court with my teammates, I am very proud of what they have accomplished this season," Bird said in a statement. "I look forward to suiting up for the Storm in 2020."
The 38-year-old, who played high school ball at Christ the King Regional High School in Queens, will complete her rehabilitation in Seattle. She will continue to have an active role in the team's locker room, the Storm said.

Since entering the league in 2002, Bird played in all but one season for the Seattle Storm. Last month, even coming off a championship season, she threatened to sit out the season while fighting for higher paychecks for WNBA players.
In 2018, Bird started in 31 games, averaging 10.1 points per game, 7.1 assists and 1.1 steals.
