Syosset Women Create LI Destination Website for the Handicapped

Roberta Rosenberg and Fran Bogal were recently honored at the Nassau County Legislature's annual Women Trailblazer Awards.

Two Syosset women were honored during the Nassau County Legislature’s annual Women Trailblazer Awards on Monday for creating the website “Destination Accessible.”

This website, which is geared towards those with physical and mental handicaps, provides detailed descriptions of leisure locations on Long Island and beyond.

Roberta Rosenberg and Fran Bogal visit museums, theaters, parks, restaurants, kid-friendly venues and more to generate content for their website. They tour the grounds, examine the parking, the entrances, restaurants and look for places to rest and relax. They check the dining facilities, amenities and determine how easy the location is to navigate and access.
Each location on their website appears with a checklist and a brief description based on their personal visits. So far, they’ve covered the Long Island and New York Metropolitan Area.

The mission of Rosenberg and Bogal’s website is for visitors to “know before they go.”

The website was inspired out of frustration with local venues and their limited handicapped accessibility. Rosenberg’s mother and father were in wheelchairs and Rosenberg also spent four months in a wheelchair herself. While on an extended visit to Florida to see her father, Rosenberg searched the web for locations that were handicapped accessible and found the information extremely lacking. There were usually no details regarding “handicapped accessible” or “we meet ADA guidelines.”

This experience inspired her to change things for the handicapped community on Long Island. Rosenberg enlisted the help of her good friend Bogal and together they developed "Destination Accessible."
