Stony Brook University held its 59th commencement on Friday, awarding some 4,500 bachelor's degrees, 2,245 master's, 460 doctoral degrees, 250 certificates, 125 M.D., and 45 D.D.S. degrees, to students from 39 states and 69 countries. Graduate ages ranged from 18 to 72.


An honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts was conferred to commencement speaker and award-winning actor Alan Alda.


The class of 2019 was represented by student speaker T'Kheya-D'Vrehy Yisrael, who is graduating with a double major in biochemistry and sociology.
