Autism Research Study for Kids 11-17 at Stony Brook University
Psychology Lab at Stony Brook University is looking for kids and teens on and off the autism spectrum who want to contribute to science!
Hi there! The Social Competence and Treatment Lab (SCTL) is a psychology research lab at Stony Brook University and needs your help!
We are looking for families in the community with children and adolescents ages 11-17 to participate in our study, Investigating Social Patterns in Youth, or I-SPY. The goal of I-SPY is to explore how children socially interact with each other on and off the autism spectrum. We understand that children socially develop in different ways, so we use psychology and behavioral tasks to understand these differences.
Through questionnaires, computer activities with an EEG, and intellectual assessments, we can see these differences! This compensated study is completely confidential, non-invasive, painless, and even involves a pizza party at the end! Some questions you may have include:

What is an EEG?
- EEG or electroencephalogram measures the electrical activity of the brain. To do this, we place a cap, similar to a swim cap that has some sensors, called electrodes, which will be attached to your child's cap. We then fill these sensors with some water based gel. We will use these to measure your child's brain activity while they play games on our computer. There are no risks associated with EEG and it is painless and non-invasive. In addition, the gel washes right out with a little water!
How many times do I have to visit the lab? What will we do when we’re there?

- This study consists of three in lab visits. At your family’s initial visit, you and your child will complete some questionnaires and evaluations, play games, and bring home a toy. At your second visit, you and your child will complete additional questionnaires, and your child will also complete some computer activities while being monitored by an EEG. At the third visit, your child will enjoy a pizza party with other children of the same gender and age range.
Our staff is fully trained in all visit activities and have all experienced the EEG. Families are compensated for their time and have the opportunity to request a free, clinical report upon completion of their visits. Sign up today to play some games and receive an Amazon gift card!
