CENTEREACH, NY — One of Suffolk County's largest Chinese New Year celebrations will be hosted near Stony Brook by the Suffolk County Asian American Advisory Board. The event is Thursday, Jan. 23 and runs from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Express Stony Brook, at 3131 Nesconset Highway, Centereach.

The free event will ring in "The Year of the Rat" and is sponsored by the venue. The celebration will feature traditional Chinese cultural demonstrations and light refreshments. Fortune cookies and punch will be served, and there will be dancing, singing and other cultural demonstrations.

Chinese Near Year is the longest national holiday in China and New Year’s Day is the most important date in the Chinese calendar, according to the SCAAAB. The Stony Brook community has one of the largest Asian-American populations on Long Island.
