Concert with acclaimed pipa musician at The Jazz Loft
On Friday April at 7pm Min Xiao-Fen pipa soloist, vocalist and composer will perform with her trio Blue Pipa.

The pipa is a Chinese lute. Min Xiao- Fen fuses jazz classics with traditional Chinese folk songs. Her compositions are inspired by Chinese folk music, regional operas and Taoist music. Her project "From Harlem to Shanghai and Back" reinterprets the work of legendary jazz trumpeter Buck Clayton, Chinese composer Li Jinhui, Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Buck Clayton brought Kansas City Swing to Shanghai in the mid 1930's. He is credited for helping to close the gap between American jazz and traditional Chinese music.
In her work Mao, Monk and Me Min intertwines her music with that of jazz icon Thelonius Monk. Throughout the evening Min and guitarist Steve Salerno will provide an account of the fascinating history of how American jazz came to China.
