Last Chance Study Opportunity at Stony Brook University

Hi there! The Social Developmental Neuroscience Lab is a psychology research lab at Stony Brook University and needs your help! We have had the opportunity to work with some amazing families in the community and we are looking for a few more to help us complete our study.

We are looking for families in the community with children ages 11-14 to help us in completing our study, Teen Risk for Anxiety Investigated through Neuroscience, or TRAIN! The purpose of this study is to look at the differences in how kids interact with one another and how these changes occur during adolescence. We understand that adolescence is a time when boys and girls begin to think and feel very differently, so
we're using neuroscience and behavioral tasks to understand those changes.

Through questionnaires, computer activities with an EEG and an fMRI scan, we can see these differences! This paid study is completely confidential, non-invasive, painless, and fun! Some questions you may have include:
So what is an EEG?
 EEG or electroencephalogram measures the electrical activity of the brain. To do this, we place a cap, similar to a swim cap that has some sensors, called electrodes, which will be attached to your child's cap using a water based gel. We will use these to measure your child's brain activity while they play games on our computer. There are no risks associated with EEG and it is painless and non-invasive. In addition, the gel
washes right out with a little water!

Okay, then what is an fMRI?

 A fMRI scanner is a giant magnet that is used to take pictures of your child's brain. Like the EEG, it is safe and non-invasive.The fMRI scanner can be a little noisy and requires your child to stay very still while it takes pictures. To help your child get used to this, at the first visit, they will have the opportunity to see what it's like to be in a scanner and understand the noises they will hear and practice playing some games in our "mock scanner". This is basically a fake version of the real scanner.

Our staff is fully trained in all visit activities and have all experienced the EEG and/or scan.
