October Summer: Record Heat, Storms For Long Island Wednesday
It's going to be a wild roller coaster weather day.
Someone forgot to tell Mother Nature it's October. Temperatures will soar to near 90 degrees on Long Island Wednesday, breaking record highs and likely sending many to local beaches for a last gasp of summer heat.
But get outside now if you can. The heat isn't sticking around for long. A cold front will sink southward from the north and bring scattered showers and thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon into the evening, the National Weather Service says. Heavy downpours are possible, but no severe weather is expected.
The cold front should push south of the region by 7-8 p.m., ending the threat for thunderstorms and ushering in significantly cooler and drier air. Brief wind gusts of 25 to 30 mph and a temperature drop of 10 to 20 degrees in a 1-2 hour period are quite possible, the NWS says.
