Stony Brook Hospital Ranked Among Nation's Best In 2 Areas

STONY BROOK, NY — Stony Brook University Hospital was recognized as a Best Hospital for 2020-21 by U.S. News & World Report, the hospital said. It ranked in the top 50 nationwide for Neurology and Neurosurgery, and Orthopedics. The assessment is designed to help patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to seek care.

Stony Brook University Hospital ranked No. 41 in Neurology and Neurosurgery, and No. 49 in Orthopedics.

As for regional standings, Stony Brook University Hospital ranked No. 10 in New York State overall out of more than 200 hospitals. That's up from No. 11 on the 2019-20 Best Hospitals rankings.

The numerical ranking is based on points earned from national and high performing rankings in each of the 12 specialties. In addition to being nationally ranked in Neurology and Neurosurgery, and Orthopedics, Stony Brook earned high performing marks in six other adult specialties: diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, nephrology, pulmonology and lung surgery, and urology. Hospitals that are not nationally ranked but scored high enough in a specialty to place them in the top 10 percent of the analyzed centers are recognized as high performing.

For the 2020-21 rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 16 specialties, 10 procedures and conditions. In the 16 specialty areas, 134 hospitals in the United States performed well enough to be nationally ranked in at least one specialty. Overall ranking is based on a combination of patient outcomes, such as discharge-to-home and risk-adjusted survival rates, in addition to processes of care and resources, including patient experience, patient and clinical services, number of patients, quality of nursing, and opinions from over 30,000 physicians.
