Long Island Weather: Strong Thunderstorms Possible This Weekend

Several rounds of moderate to possibly heavy rain will impact Long Island late Thursday night into Saturday morning, the National Weather Service says.

Up to 2 inches of rain in all is possible.

"Friday into Friday night we will see on and off showers but they will become more numerous Friday night into Saturday morning as the second wave goes by," Joe Cioffi, a meteorologist for WPIX-TV and FiOS1 News, writes on his website. "From this we could see some strong thunderstorms overnight into early Saturday morning."

The Friday morning commute will likely be a wet one with rain almost guaranteed to be falling from 5-10 a.m., the NWS says.

Thursday Night- Showers likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 4am. Low around 60. South wind 9 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Friday- Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 10am, then showers likely. Steady temperature around 64. South wind 13 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Friday Night- Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after midnight. Low around 56. South wind 10 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Saturday- Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before noon, then a chance of showers. High near 62. Breezy, with a south wind 10 to 15 mph becoming west 18 to 23 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 41. West wind 10 to 14 mph.

Sunday- Sunny, with a high near 53.

Sunday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 43.

Monday- A 50 percent chance of rain after 10am. Partly sunny, with a high near 57.

Monday Night- A 50 percent chance of showers. Cloudy, with a low around 49.

Tuesday- A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 61.

Tuesday Night- Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 54. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Wednesday- Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 64. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
