Three Village JHS Science Olympiad Teams Head To Nationals

P.J. Gelinas and R.C. Murphy Junior High School Science Olympiad teams captured first and second place at the New York competition.

SETAUKET, NY — Three Village middle schoolers know their science.

The P.J. Gelinas and R.C. Murphy Junior High School Science Olympiad teams captured first and second place wins, respectively, at the virtual New York state Science Olympiad competition this April, the district announced in a news release. Both teams qualified to compete in the National Science Olympiad Tournament.

During the state event, the teams competed against 52 of the best teams from throughout New York and demonstrated their understanding of myriad science topics and concepts. Earlier this year, the teams also competed in the Eastern Long Island Regional Contest and several Invitational competitions that were held virtually from other states, including Florida, Illinois, California and Wisconsin.

The national competition will be held virtually from Arizona State University due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, even though the competition is virtual this year, there will be a weeklong schedule of events beginning on May 17 leading up to the competition on May 22 for students to participate in.
