Trail's Blazers Set to Open New Hiking Path in Stony Brook Park
Legislator Hahn and advocates for County park's creation to mark installation of nature trail first envisioned over 1 1/2 decades ago
On Monday, July 27, 2015, Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn and founding members of the Coalition to Save Stony Brook Village will officially open an approximate 1.5 mile hiking trail within Forsythe Meadow County Park. The path’s addition marks the latest in a series of improvements made to increase accessibility at the Park, including the addition of a six car parking area and fencing installed by local Boy Scouts.
The 34 acre site was purchased by the County in 2000 after developmental pressures threatened to turn “Stony Brook’s Last Forrest” into a 40 lot subdivision. At the time, a coalition of civic and community groups pushed for then Legislator Vivian Viloria-Fisher to pursue an acquisition by the County for passive park purposes, including hiking.
In April, 2012 the preserve portion of Forsythe Meadow County Park was rededicated in memory of former Suffolk County Legislator Nora Bredes who represented the area from 1992 through 1998.
