Wintry Weather Headed Toward Long Island

BREAKING: The temperature topped 60 degrees on Long Island Tuesday, but wintry weather may be on its way.

It was a gorgeous December Tuesday on Long Island with the temperature hitting 61 degrees at MacArthur Airport, but the nice weather won't be sticking around. Temperatures will drop to near freezing overnight, and Wednesday will see a high near 43, but wind chill temperatures will be between 25-35 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Thursday is when we could get a taste of wintry weather. A storm system is expected to drop more than a foot of snow across much of New England. Here on Long Island, we are looking at just a chance of snow Thursday morning and then rain, possibly heavy at times, the rest of the day.

"The pattern initially is not favorable for a widespread, significant snowfall event," the NWS says of the local region. "However, it could be cold enough at the onset for precipitation to to begin as snow with a brief period of mixing before changing over to plain rain, especially for the coast."
