March is Women’s History Month, and Emma Clark Library has some free & fascinating online classes commemorating the vital role of women in history. All of these lectures below begin at 7:00 p.m.
“My Betsey”: The Remarkable Wife of Alexander Hamilton
Tuesday, March 2
Enjoy an online lecture on this amazing woman. In addition to learning about Eliza Hamilton’s life with Alexander (including their eight children; her reaction to his affair with Maria Reynolds; his fatal duel with Aaron Burr in 1804), you will also hear about the 50 more years after his death that she spent salvaging the reputation of her distinguished husband and working on behalf of orphans & public education in New York. Finding Her Way: The Rise of American Women Artists, 1845 – 1945
Monday, March 8
American women artists working before 1945 had to navigate societal expectations of women’s domestic roles with their drive to be professionals. These artists often faced difficult choices – sacrificing in their personal lives or in their careers. Despite evident talent and success, most fell into obscurity with their death. In this interactive class you will discover and closely examine works by women artists who collectively paint a picture of a changing America. It is led by Rena Tobey whose greatest passion is making art accessible, invigorating, insightful, and fun. She teaches art history at NYU’s School for Professional Studies. Click here to register.
