UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — 91-year-old lox slicer Len Berk was honored by the city and state on Monday for his commitment to service at Zabar's on the Upper West Side.

Berk recently returned to his station at the iconic store slicing salmon with his 18-inch knife for eager customers.

"For 26 years, Len Berk has been Zabar's beloved lox slicer — it was wonderful to honor him together with Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul for his service to the UWS and NYC," Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer tweeted. "Wonderful reminder that small businesses as this are the bedrock of our communities and make our city stronger."

Berk's employment was temporarily furloughed in March 2020 when New York City entered COVID-19 lockdown, but he was able to return to work a few weeks ago after receiving his second vaccination shot in February.

"I found that slicing salmon is a very sensual experience," Berks told the Post, who worked as an accountant before taking up the Zabar's position in retirement. "I slide my hands across the oily surface of the fish, and it's so soothing and relaxing — it's a very pleasant feeling."

You can find out more about Berks from a 2015 video where he breaks down his salmon slicing.
