UPDATE: 5:20 P.M.

NYPD arrested Roderick Smith on Wednesday for two counts of attempted bank robbery, with one of the charges connected to a robbery that took place just before 1 p.m. at the HSBC Bank at 721 Amsterdam Avenue.

Police told Patch that a man entered the bank Wednesday on the corner of Amsterdam Avenue and West 95th Street at 12:54 p.m., passed a note to the teller demanding money, pretended like he had a gun. He then fled the building without securing any cash, according to NYPD.

Shortly after, police arrested Smith, an Upper West Side resident, in connection to the midday Wednesday bank robbery.

A police spokesperson told Patch that a man robbed the HSBC Bank at 721 Amsterdam Avenue just before 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

NYPD did not immediately provide details about the robbery and the amount of money the man was able to get away with. The spokesperson did tell Patch, however, that the robber fled from the bank on the corner of Amsterdam Avenue and West 95th Street toward Columbus Avenue.

The midday robbery comes a day after a Wells Fargo on the corner of West 89th Street and Broadway was robbed when a man passed a note to the bank teller demanding money.

The robbery attempt on Wednesday is the seventh time since the beginning of March that someone has tried to rob a bank on the Upper West Side.
