UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — Coronavirus cases have temporarily closed down five more Upper West Side schools, bringing the total in the neighborhood to six.

The school closures in the neighborhood come as COVID-19 rates across the city continue to tick up.

P.S. 75, P.S. 84, P.S. 811, P.S. 87, and P.S. 199 join the West Side YMCA as schools closed down on the Upper West Side as of Wednesday.

According to the Department of Education's guidelines, school buildings must automatically close pending an investigation when at least two COVID-19 cases linked to each other are confirmed in separate classrooms. The closure is extended when the infections occurred outside of school or a link between them cannot be determined.

Here are more details about the six schools closed.

Officials hope to avert another disruptive citywide school closure that shifts all students to fully remote, as happened in November.
