The Cottage Eatery Is Reopening On The UWS This Summer: Report
Owner Benny Cheong told ILoveTheUpperWestSide that the popular Chinese restaurant will reopen in a new UWS location this summer.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — The popular Chinese restaurant The Cottage is reopening this summer on the Upper West Side in a new neighborhood location after it closed its doors in the spring of 2020, according to ILoveTheUpperWestSide.
"The menu will be very similar as the old Cottage but with a slight difference," Benny Cheong, the owner of The Cottage, told ILoveTheUpperWestSide. "We are focused on providing everyone authentic Szechuan cuisine. The restaurant is currently under renovation, but we expect to open in the summer."
Cheong did not respond to multiple calls from Patch.

The popular Chinese restaurant closed after a 40-year run in the neighborhood. At the time, owners said they weren't able to work out a new lease with its landlord at 77th and Amsterdam.
However, in March, a liquor license approval request was processed by the New York State Liquor Authority for "The Cottage Restaurant" at 2199 Broadway, which is at the corner of 78th Street.

Now, a recent Landmarks Preservation Commission filing has granted permission for space alterations to be made to the 2199 Broadway address — and the documents list "The Cottage Restaurant" as the owner.
The 2199 Broadway location, which is the former home of La Caridad, is within the West End-Collegiate Historic District Extension, meaning that any business coming into the area must approve all property alterations with the Landmark Preservation Committee.
Some of the alterations include a new walk-in cooler and walk-in freezer, adding a new ice machine, installing new lights and bathrooms, and floor and ceiling replacements, according to the filings.
