UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — A GoFundMe started this week by a loyal customer has raised over $3,400 for a long-time diner on the Upper West Side set to close at the end of November.

The Pier 72 diner at 270 West 72nd Street is expected to close after the owner didn't sign a one-year lease offered by the building's co-op board, according to the West Side Rag.

The diner has served customers on the Upper West Side since 1979.

On Monday, long-time customer Maggie Murphy started a GoFundMe to "give the hard-working staff the tip of a lifetime."

The fundraiser's goal is not to make up the difference of the significant financial loss the diner has faced during the coronavirus pandemic, but instead raise as much as they can for the staff that will soon be without jobs.

"We have shared so many memories with our family there," Murphy wrote in the description of the GoFundMe. "It won't be enough to thank them for all the memories they have helped us make. But it will let them know we loved going to the 'Pier" and we will never forget them."

The fundraiser has blown past its goal of $2,500.

As of Friday midday, the GoFundMe has had 48 donors raise $3,434 for the staff.
